Haroune Aqueduct Overview

A Historical Landmark

Haroune Aqueduct

The Haroune Aqueduct, located in Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, Morocco, is a significant historical structure built in the early 20th century. Commissioned by Sultan Moulay Abdel Aziz, this aqueduct serves the crucial function of transporting water from the Ain Chanch spring to the nearby city, tapping into the effectiveness of ancient Roman engineering techniques.

Stretching approximately 60 meters in length, the aqueduct features dual tiers of arches reminiscent of Roman aqueducts, combining both aesthetic and functional design. The lower tier consists of seven arches, while the longer upper tier boasts 14 arches that reach a maximum height of around 10 meters. This design was not merely for decoration but efficiently utilized to convey water across the landscape.

Despite its resemblance to ancient relics, the Haroune Aqueduct is a modern construction that effectively showcases the enduring nature of aqueduct technology. Visitors can appreciate the elegant architecture while observing the practical use of water supply in the region. This iconic structure stands as a testament to Morocco's blend of cultural heritage and engineering ingenuity.
